Books & Magazines
Urban Tantra: Sacred Sex for the Twenty-First Century, by Barbara Carrellas. Absolute gold. This book was an important part of Curious Creatures' learning. It is an approach to sexuality that is accessible, diversity-friendly, and just a damn fine read. If the common masculine / feminine approach to tantra doesn't work for you, then check this book out.
The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships, and Other Freedoms in Sex and Love, by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy. A great primer (and then some) about polyamory. A very good read if you're considering any other relationship style than straight-down-the-line monogamy (and even then, a bunch of the stuff around insecurities, jealousy and communication is still very applicable).
A Better Normal: Your Guide to Rediscovering Intimacy After Cancer, by Tess Deveze. Tess, a facilitator with Curious Creatures and creator of many of our pre-recorded trainings, has put together this 'must have' book on cancer and sexuality, inspired in part by their own journey through cancer. As an Occupational Therapist, they bring a credible recovery approach to the world of sex, and do so in a way that makes no assumptions about gender, relationships, goals, or anything else. A very strong recommend.
The Art of the Hook-Up, by Aussie escort, Georgie Wolf. In this straightforward guide, Georgie offers practical strategies for casual sex and online dating. She shows how communication, consent, and connection can put you ahead of the competition at every stage of the hook-up process. Plus she runs this Melbourne workshop, on the same.
Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns: The Romance and Sexual Sorcery of Sadomasochism, by Philip Miller and Molly Devon.
This unabashed, entertaining book strips away myth, shame and fear, revealing the truth about an intense form of eroticism too long misunderstood and condemned.
The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Passion and Fulfillment, by Jack Morin. Based on an in-depth analysis of over 1,000 provocative stories of peak sexual experiences, The Erotic Mind offers clear, accessible guidance on how anyone can utilize their own peak encounters and fantasies as powerful tools of self-discovery.
Playing Well With Others: Your Field Guide to Discovering, Navigating and Exploring the Kink, Leather and BDSM Communities, by Lee Harrington and Molleena Williams. Whether you're a trembling novice or a jaded expert, there's always something new to be discovered in the endlessly changing, complex and titillating world of kink.
When Someone You Love is Kinky, by Dossie Easton and Catherine A. Liszt. Designed to introduce people with no experience to the leather community, this book explains what S/M players do and how we make it safe.
Meg-John Barker is a sex and relationship researcher and a therapist; Justin Hancock is a sex educator and youth worker. Their approach to sexuality, gender and relationships has a lot in common with our sex-party, Curiosity; consent is the focus, clear communication is emphasized, and there is no one way to approach having fun. Their book, Enjoy Sex (How, when and IF you want to): A Practical and Inclusive Guide is accessible and brilliant. Their podcast and zines are worth checking out too: http://megjohnandjustin.com/
